Unzip Mac Terminal



  • The first step is to open Terminal. Use the 'cd' command to change the directory to the location where you want to unzip the zip file. For example you can use: cd./Desktop. The next step is to invoke the unzip command. Type the following into Terminal. This assumes you have a zip file ready to unzip.
  • The simplest way to open and extract a.xip archive file is with Archive Utility, which is bundled with the Mac operating system. This is must like opening a.zip file too. Assuming you haven't associated the xip format with any third party archive management tools, you can typically open a.xip file in Archive Utility simply by double.

You must be an administrator or root user, also called superuser, to execute many of the commands used to manage a server.

In the Terminal app on your Mac, choose Terminal Quit Terminal. Quit a shell session In the Terminal app on your Mac, in the window running the shell process you want to quit, type exit, then press Return. Open the terminal and use the cd command to change directories to the directory where the mongodb-linux-x8664-2.6.3.tgz file is located and the run the following command. Tar xzf mongodb-linux-x8664-2.6.3.tgz The above command will extract the contents of the mongodb-linux-x8664-2.6.3.tgz archive while preserving the archive's hierarchical tree directory structure.

For example, if you're not an administrator or a root user, entering the shutdown command gives you an error:

This is because the shutdown command can be run only by the root user or by an administrator user with root user privileges.

If a command requires it, you can use su to switch to the root user. Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't log in as the root user.

Important: If you use su to log in as the root user, be especially careful, because you have sufficient privileges to make changes that can cause your computer to stop working.
